What you can expect
You’ll have a dedicated claim manager who will help you through the process. They will:
- listen to what you have to say
- help collect any documents you need
- explain what compensation you can get based on your situation
- explain the types of help and support you can get to make your claim
- answer your questions so you’ll always know what to expect next
If you’re part of an existing support scheme, we’ll use the information we already have to make things quicker for you.
Here’s how it will work:
- We’ll contact you when the service is ready for you to claim.
- Your claim manager will check what information we already have about you, and if there’s anything else we need.
- Your claim manager will arrange to speak with you, so you will know what to expect.
- We’ll help you gather any documents we need to help make sure you get the compensation you are entitled to.
- We’ll calculate your compensation amount.
- We’ll tell you how much and what types of compensation you can get based on your situation.
- You’ll decide whether to accept the compensation amount we’ve sent you.
- If you accept, we will arrange to transfer the money to you.
You’ll have some decisions to make about whether to take a single payment or regular payments, and whether to continue with current support payments if you’re registered with an existing scheme. We’ll explain all the options to you and support you to make sure you’re comfortable with your choice.
Your rights
You will not have to pay income tax, capital gains tax or inheritance tax on your compensation money. It will not affect any means tested benefits you receive. It also does not stop you making a claim through the court.
