What happens to your current support payments
If you’re getting regular support payments from an existing support scheme, you can choose to continue getting support payments or not.
This choice of whether to continue receiving support scheme payments only affects the ‘care’ and ‘financial loss’ parts of your compensation.
If you continue with your support payments you’ll get both:
- your payments from the existing scheme as you do now and for the rest of your life
- your IBCA compensation as described on these pages, but ‘care’ and ‘financial loss’ payment will only cover past years, not future years
- If you die before receiving the full value of your assessed future financial loss and future care as support scheme payments, your remaining compensation will be calculated up to your healthy life expectancy and paid to your estate
If you choose to stop getting your support payments, you’ll get your full IBCA compensation as described on these pages. This includes past and future financial loss and care compensation.
You’ll get a top up payment to make sure you’re not left worse off if your continuing support payments are less than you would have got through IBCA.
The best option for you will depend on your personal situation. Your claim manager will support you so that you’re comfortable with your decision.
The existing support schemes are:
- England Infected Blood Support Scheme
- Infected Blood Payment Scheme for Northern Ireland
- Scottish Infected Blood Support Scheme
- Wales Infected Blood Support Scheme
Support Scheme transition
From 1 April 2025, payments from a support scheme — including any discretionary payments — will be included in compensation calculations by the Infected Blood Compensation Authority (IBCA).
This does not include:
- payments for pre-payment prescription certificates
- grants for talking therapy
These will not be considered as part of compensation applications.
Change in responsibility
Responsibility for making support scheme payments will move from IBSS to IBCA.
Payments will automatically transfer on the following dates:
- Wales – 15 January 2026
- Scotland – 1 February 2026
- Northern Ireland – 1 February 2026
- England – 23 March 2026
