In January we started to publish our figures showing how many claims we had invited and processed, and how much compensation we had paid. As part of our ongoing commitment to build a compensation service, based on openness and transparency, we will publish our latest statistics on the last Thursday of every month.
As of Friday 21 February 2025:
- 204 people have been invited to start their compensation claim
- 149 people have started the claim process
- 38 offers of compensation have been made, totalling £48,231,500.33
- 22 people have accepted their offers with £25,153,007.62 paid in compensation.
We are steadily increasing the number of people invited to begin making their compensation claim, before opening up the claims service further after March 2025. We are on track to meet our aim of around 250 invites by March, and these are helping us design and test the service for everyone as we build it.
These monthly figures currently include only the lump sum compensation payments, and not where a person has decided to receive support payments for life. This detail will be included in future publications, from April 2025 onwards.
The claim process
We’re making the claim process as easy as possible. This includes:
- The initial invitation to make a compensation claim is sent by email or in the post.
- The person making the claim will have an initial call with their dedicated claim manager. This will be over the phone, or through a video call, depending on the preference of the person making a claim.
- Claim managers will work through the information that has been given to IBCA by the support schemes with the person making their claim. They will identify any additional information needed and support the person making the claim to find this information.
- The claim manager and the person making the claim then agree that all the information is correct and complete in a declaration form. This form will support IBCA to calculate the amount of compensation due.
- IBCA then calculates the compensation claim and discusses this with the person making the claim.
- If the compensation calculation is agreed by the person making the claim, a compensation offer is then formally made by IBCA.
- Throughout the process, the person making the claim is kept up to date on progress by their dedicated claim manager, and their agreement is sought at every stage.
People making a claim then have up to three months to decide whether to accept their offer of compensation, once received. For some people, it can be useful to take more time to consider a compensation offer and seek further advice. Feedback from the first people to claim shows that they value the offer of independent legal and financial advice, paid for by IBCA.
