Adjusting your compensation awards: step by step

You can only receive the social impact or the autonomy award once, even if you’re making multiple claims.

The following steps will help you adjust your social impact award and autonomy award in each estimate to avoid overestimating your compensation.

The amounts on this page are to give an example of how to adjust your awards.

1. Get an estimate for your first claim using the compensation calculator

Make a note of the following amounts - you'll see them on the 'Breakdown of your estimate' after you've confirmed your answers:

  • compensation estimate
  • social impact award
  • autonomy award

If there is no autonomy award in your breakdown, just include the compensation estimate and social impact award.

It may help to write these down in a table like this:

Compensation estimate Social impact award Autonomy award
Claim 1 £88,000 £12,000 £16,000
Claim 2
Claim 3

2. Go back to the calculator and get an estimate for your second claim

Again, make a note of the following amounts:

  • compensation estimate
  • social impact award
  • autonomy award

Repeat this step for any further claims.

Compensation estimate Social impact award Autonomy award
Claim 1 £88,000 £12,000 £16,000
Claim 2 £73,000 £12,000 £6,600
Claim 3

3. Cross out all your social impact award amounts, apart from the highest

If your social impact awards are the same, cross out one of them.

You should be left with 1 entry in the social impact award column.

Compensation estimate Social impact award Autonomy award
Claim 1 £88,000 £12,000 £16,000
Claim 2 £73,000 £12,000 £6,600
Claim 3

4. Cross out all your autonomy award amounts, apart from the highest

If there is no autonomy award in your breakdown, skip this step.

If your autonomy awards are the same, cross out one of them.

You should be left with 1 entry in the autonomy award column.

Compensation estimate Social impact award Autonomy award
Claim 1 £88,000 £12,000 £16,000
Claim 2 £73,000 £12,000 £6,600
Claim 3

5. Add your compensation estimates together

Compensation estimate
Claim 1 £88,000
Claim 2 £73,000
Claim 1 + Claim 2 £161,000

6. Deduct the crossed-out amounts from your combined estimates

The amount you are left with will be your total compensation estimate for all your claims.

Claim 1 + Claim 2 £161,000
Lower social impact award - £12,000
Lower autonomy award - £6,600
Total compensation estimate £142,400
