Supplementary route
A financial loss payment may be available through the supplementary route for a bereaved affected person who was financially dependent on an infected person when they died.
They won’t be eligible for the supplementary route if they were a bereaved partner, or a bereaved child under the age of 18 who is not disabled. This is because they can receive a financial loss award under the core route, which recognises the financial dependency they had on the infected person.
Other affected family members who are eligible for the compensation scheme may be eligible. The estate may be eligible if the person who died was a bereaved parent or sibling and you can provide evidence that the following are true:
- the affected person dependent on the infected child or sibling for at least 6 months before the infected person died
- they had reasonable expectation that this support would continue
- the infected person had not received compensation from IBCA before they died
If the person who died was a bereaved child of an infected person and they were disabled, the estate might be eligible for an additional financial loss award through this route. This will be on top of the award from the core route that recognises financial dependency up until the age of 18. This is to recognise that, because of the disability, the child might have been financially dependent on the infected person after they turned 18.
If you intend to apply for the supplementary route you must indicate this to IBCA when you apply. You will not be eligible if you receive and accept a core route award for the person who died
