How the compensation is worked out
Compensation for someone who is affected is made up of categories called 'awards'. Each award recognises a different part of the affected person's life where infected blood had an impact.
Not everyone will be able to get all these categories - it depends on their relationship to the infected person.
Injury
Recognises the emotional or psychological harm caused by their relationship to the infected person.
Social impact
Recognises the stigma, isolation or family disruption caused to their social or emotional life.
Autonomy
Recognises loss of independence or ability to make certain choices. Partners, and some parents and children, are eligible.
Financial loss
Compensation if they lost income because they were financially dependent on an infected person who has died. Bereaved partners and bereaved children who were under the age of 18 when their parent died are eligible through the core route. Others may be eligible for a supplementary financial loss award with evidence of dependency.
There is no 'care' award for someone who is affected
The ‘care’ category that’s part of an infected person’s compensation is not part of compensation for someone who was affected.
If the infected person had acute Hepatitis C
Acute Hepatitis C infections are considered time-bound and limited to the infected person. Under the scheme, anperson who was affected by a person with this type of infection is not eligible for compensation.
