Supplementary route for affected people
You might be eligible for a financial loss payment through the supplementary route if you are a bereaved affected person who was dependent on an infected person when they died.
You won’t be eligible for the supplementary route if you are a bereaved partner, or a bereaved child under the age of 18 who is not disabled. This is because you already receive a financial loss award under the core route, which is to recognise the financial dependency you are expected to have on the infected person.
Other affected family members who are eligible for the compensation scheme may be eligible. You may be eligible if you are a bereaved parent or sibling and you can provide evidence that you were dependent on your infected child or sibling when they died.
If you are a bereaved child of an infected person and you are disabled, you might be eligible for an additional financial loss award through this route. This will be on top of the award you get through the core route to recognise your financial dependency up until the age of 18. This is to recognise that, because of your disability, you might have been financially dependent on the infected person after you turned 18.
If you intend to apply for the supplementary route you must indicate this to IBCA when you apply. You will not be eligible once you have received and accepted your core route award.
