As you may be aware, the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Infected Blood Compensation Authority), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.
We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and we provide a response for your attention.
Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Data directorate of the Infected Blood Compensation Authority. We can confirm that the information you have requested is held by the Infected Blood Compensation Authority.
You asked the following
- Can you please provide me with the numbers for the Hepatitis B claims registered with IBCA as a total ?
- Can you please also provide me with the numbers of those registered in total for the over 75 years old in the Hep B claims as a total that registered with IBCA?
Our response
We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) and have provided a response for your attention below.
- We have received 1117 registrations for Hepatitis B claims. This includes living infected registrations and deceased infected registrations where the deceased individual had Hepatitis B. This also includes potential co-infected individuals (Hepatitis B + something else).

This totals 1117. To determine age, we have used the date of birth of the infected individual or the date of birth of the beneficiary for deceased infected registrations. We have 33 Hepatitis B registrations where a date of birth was not recorded (these are all deceased infected registrations where providing a beneficiary date of birth is optional).
Please note that for both of the responses above, we are counting the number of unique registrations. Due to potential for duplicate registrations being submitted this is not the unique number of individuals who have registered.
